Achievement unlocked. I joined our Formula SAE team! Won't be able to do much this semester as I'm buried with classes, but I could probably help clean the shop lol!

I don't think my university has a Formula SAE team :( But being a chem major probably wouldn't do much for the engineering aspect. . .

Good decisions. You'll learn just as much if not more in that club than you will in a majority of your undergrad classes.

Have you ever looked at the chemical analysis of an internal combustion engine? Or a tire compound? Or carbon fiber parts? If you look hard enough there's an application for any major in FSAE.

Of course, teams always need someone who can spin a wrench, weld, or machine, and it doesn't take a degree to do any of that stuff.

Nice and welcome to the club! Any idea where your school competes? Mine always heads to the one in Michigan.

I realize that. Chemistry and new polymers can be developed to make stronger lighter parts and stickier tires. It still doesn't change the fact my university doesn't have a Formula SAE team. It is kind of a bummer but on the other note one of the professors is doing research on biofuels, mainly biodiesel.

Alright, another Red Raider around here! Congrats on joining up on the SAE team.

Or make runs for snacks/drinks during the late hours of getting things finished before a competition!

That's one of the goals. I'll actually get to apply what I learn and also get to use a little ingenuity to get things working right.

Plus I know my way around a car, and that'll help matters too lol!

Yup, you currently going to Tech?

Senior by hours for me, but I won't graduate until Spring '15 lol.

I know they go to Michigan for sure, not sure about where else. It's a team still in its infancy, I think they've only had 3 cars done so far. We don't have the lineage like Texas A&M, but it seems like I'm in with a pretty smart group!

I finished my first degree in 2009 and my second in 2011. So nope, I moved on down to Austin after that.

Ahh cool. Yeah, I should have finished in '06 but had to take a break due to finances. Back in it full steam now!

Yeah you will see some of the bigger teams dominate regularly because of the ludicrous amounts sponsorship $$$ and graduate student designs but that is just motivation to stick it to them when you come out of left field. My school has been doing Formula SAE for about 25+ years if I remember correctly and every year we try something new and different (you can thank us every year when the new rules come out). Keep me in the loop with how things are going it would be cool to see how things stack up when everyone heads over to Michigan.

Yeah, it seems weight reduction is the biggest thing on our plate this year.

First car was over 500lbs!

I think I'll just help out here and there and learn from the guys that are on the team this year. My Thermodynamics teacher is a grad student that helped spearhead the SAE team for TTU, so it looks like I've got somebody I can talk to outside of the shop lol!

500 lbs is a good start point I know of teams who were over 800... Weight plays a very crucial role with the restrictions on displacement and intakes. Our 2011 car weighed in at 350 without driver or fuel thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber. Also keeping the car narrow and short are key due to the track being really tight. I did some quick math and found that it was better power to weight than a Porsche cayman.
